I am thinking about filing a provisional application, but I don't really know if I should save my money and just skip to the utility. Any thoughts?

There are a lot of factors to consider before choosing which type of patent to invest in. May I suggest you read the FREE eBook you are en_title_d to as a member of this site. Specifically, read "Patents & More"

Good luck!

I do not know if "testaccount" is still active or not or if this is still a relevant topic. The filing of a provisional patent has saved me in the past. Though you try to protect yourself with NDA documents, there is nothing like a registered provisional with the USPTO.

Hi
If you dont know whether your invention has has any marketing potential, then for the $100 cost of a provisional you can expose your invention in prototype form or as a catalopg sheet to a retailer or anyone else in the trade for an opinion. There was a study done some years ago and for patents issued to individuals only 4% made any money. If the idea passes muster you have a year to file.
