Brainstorming has long been a favored method of coming out with effective ideas and solutions. It can be done individually as well as in a group, but both ways the basic method remains same. The intention is to collect as many ideas as possible, irrespective of whether they are good, excellent or plain whacko!

A good brainstorming session begins with a clearly defined problem. Parameters if any are mentioned in the beginning. Only ideas or solutions related to and focused on the problem are considered. Except for this limitation, all kinds of ideas are encouraged, from the seriously practical to the wildest.

The focus is on quantity; the logic behind this is that you must get all the usual or ineffective stuff out of your system before the good and innovative ideas start coming out. It is vital that the free flow of ideas is maintained. Since criticism can immediately inhibit the flow of ideas, the atmosphere should be open to all and any kind of ideas. So AVOID all criticism whether it is internal or external. However participants can help with positive insights into others’ ideas and help in developing them. However it is helpful to not follow a single string of thought for too long as that may limit the quantity of ideas generated.

Lighten up! It relaxes you and opens up your mind. This is especially helpful in group sessions; it energizes the atmosphere and motivates everyone to participate wholeheartedly.

Finally, someone should be appointed to note down all the ideas as they are generated during the session so that they can be evaluated in a later session.

Brainstorming has proven to be very useful and is a highly popular method. It especially helps in breaking out of typical patterns of thinking and looking at problems from entirely different perspectives. This sometimes gives rise to benefits and opportunities which were not even thought about. Group brainstorming gives solutions the advantages that come from several unique perspectives working together, this increases the richness of the final solution.
