Finding and hiring good personnel can be quite a challenging task if you are just in the process of starting your business. The best talent is typically not available when you are just starting out and it is usually not possible for a startup company to employ personnel with big pay packages. This is a time when you have to think creatively and employ all your resources to secure the best talent possible within your resources.

You must have a detailed plan of action so that you can get the best and the brightest from the available talent pool. Your hiring strategy should include:
a)    Making a staffing plan
b)    Starting the search for good personnel
c)    Preparing questions for interviews
d)    Checking references

a)    Making the staffing plan: First, identify the jobs for which you need to hire personnel. Then decide on the qualifications, education and work experience that you expect from the personnel for each position. Next, create a hiring timeline so that you can have a clear idea as to when the positions need to be filled.

b)    Starting the search for good personnel: There are many ways in which you can search for good personnel for your organization. It is preferable that you first contact the local unemployment office and other public employment agencies. Craigslist.com is also a useful source. Other organizations that should be in your personnel recruiting list are high schools, religious institutions, the local Chamber of Commerce and private employment agencies.

c)    Preparing the questions for interviews: There are multiple methods to developing questions:

•    The application process by which you learn details concerning the prospective employee.
•    You need to identify, in advance, the qualifications required, and then determine whether the person you are interviewing meets those qualifications
•    Ask about their previous experiences for the position they are being interviewed and judge on the basis of their answer
•    Look for clues about their commitment to work and try to identify how goal oriented they are.

d)    Checking references: It is recommended that you check at least three references per candidate, but check adequately enough so that you can be completely sure about the background of the candidate.

If you follow these steps, you will increase the likelihood of finding and hiring good employees for your new business venture.
