Global integration has dissolved transnational boundaries to a large extent. The diffusion of culture and nature of people around the world has leveraged the demand for unique product designs. Specialization and open technology of this borderless world are demanding products that are innovative. The price for a product has taken more of a back seat now. Quality and design are driving forces. Varied cultural differences, coupled with discerning customer behavior, have compelled organizations to concentrate more on product design.
Companies can attain a significant position in a product’s design aspect if they focus on the following factors: • Companies have to take some risk to create an innovative product design. • Companies should encourage cross-functional teams. This will enable one team to observe and absorb the weak signals from the environment and feed the development team with the necessary information. • Exploration of new markets can also expand business and help customers experience the benefits of a product. • Understanding customer requirements is essential. This cannot be obtained by just questioning customers about their requirements, but by studying the purchasing habits of customers. Keeping the target market in perspective, companies are designing their products for success. A number of factors need to be considered while designing a product for a increasingly borderless world, including societal change, technology change, regulatory change, environmental change, customer feedback, supply chain, suppliers and after sales service. |
