Inventors’ minds are always bubbling with new ideas which they hope to realize one day. The market for all products and services has become very competitive. This has made commercial success a tough achievement. There are several companies which understand the potential of inventors, and hire them for developing their products and services. But there also are brilliant inventors working individually, who lag behind, simply due to the lack of active financial support. The world would never come to know about an invention, however useful or brilliant it maybe, unless the inventor is able to present it to the public, but in order to do that, the inventor needs funding.

Many organizations and investors recognize the value of inventors.  This is a potential source of funds. Some methods for obtaining invention funding are:

Government grants:

Governments in almost all countries offer grants and loans for invention research purposes. These grants are, however, specific to the type of invention. In order to get such a grant or loan, the inventor has to conduct substantial research activities to research government requirements. NASA and state organizations sometimes fund new technologies as a way to promote economic development in their area.

Look for investors:

“Angel investors” often invest in innovations that cater to their interests. They sometime invest outside of these interests. An inventor should look for investors that may be interested in the invention, and who could provide active financial support. Almost all big cities have at least one angel investor group, and sometimes several. You can also find mentors through these groups.

Become an entrepreneur:

It is also a good idea to become an entrepreneur and fund the invention personally or through friends and family. This enables the inventor to work more independently, and potentially improve his/her profits.

Student programs for investment funding:

Students who venture into inventing new products are often awarded and funded through school sponsored programs. They should participate in Invention competitions which are regularly conducted by various organizations. The winners of these competitions get cash rewards and/or financial support for their inventions.

Join local inventor groups:

Local inventor groups are great for learning about various matters pertaining to the invention process. Such groups also help in building networks which can prove to be immensely helpful.
