Leaving your home answering machine phone number and no company name with a manufacturer when you are trying to get a quote for 100,000 widgets is not only not going to get you that low price quote you wanted, the manufacturer will probably never call you back again and most likely put you on their "waste of time" list.

How could they take you seriously? You left a call back phone number that had your kids screaming on the answering machine! Companies who call you won't perceive you as being a REAL company if you do things like this.

In order to be perceived as a REAL company, all you need is a company name and phone number.

If you are just starting out, have no company name and no business phone line. No worries, you can fake it and set up your company in under 10 minutes.

Setting Up Your Company Name 

This parts super easy. Just take your name and put the word "Design" behind it. I use "Stephen Key Design". This works great for two reasons. First,if you use your full first and last name in the company name you don't have to file a fictitious business name statement in most jurisdictions. You can instantly start doing business under your new company name

Another reason why I like this approach is that putting "Design" behind your name is quite ambiguous. Design what? If you're like me and are jumping from industry to industry inventing different products this same ambiguous company name let's me design one type of product one day and another type of product another day. 

Of course you could just use your full name and use another word in place of "design" if "design" doesn't fit for your particular business.

Take your home phone line or preferably your cell phone and change the message to your business message and give the number out as your business line. Your friends and family will still know it's you they are calling since you are using your full name as part of your new company name.

I think the cell phone option is better than your home phone since you can always get away somewhere quite to take or make a call with a cell phone.

Now you have no excuse to get that new company you were thinking about started. Do it now and 10 minutes later you'll be in business!
